The 29th "H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's Cup Thailand Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship" was held in the city of Chiang Rai in northern Thailand. This event includes the 6th Ms. Fitness, the 5th Mr. Fitness and the 5th Women Bodybuilding competitions. The 2009 Mr Thailand coincided with the National Games Pre-Selection Region 5, resulting in 3 days of bodybuilding activities.
The decision to hold the competition in northern Chiang Rai prevented some athletes from the Bangkok area and south of Thailand to join the event as the distances are quite large. The northern provinces came out in full force however and made up some lost ground. This could not prevent the elimination of three categories compared to last year's competition.
Saturday afternoon saw the pre-judging of all categories, with the finals held on Sunday afternoon. Local bodybuilding hero Somkhit Sumethowetchakun was declared winner of the H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's Cup, and may call himself Mr Thailand of 2009. The Best Team Award went to Powerzone Gym from Bangkok, with 2nd place going to the Chiang Rai bodybuilding team. Chiang Mai followed in 3rd place.
